John G. Roberts, Jr. will be sworn in as the 109th Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and the 17th Chief Justice of the United States in a ceremony in the Courtroom on Monday, October 3, at 9:15 a.m. The invitation-only Investiture will be followed by oral arguments at 10:30 a.m.

Earlier today, Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, the most senior member of the Supreme Court, administered the Constitutional Oath to John G. Roberts, Jr. in a public ceremony at the White House. Members of the Supreme Court, their spouses, and family members of the new Chief Justice attended the ceremony. At the White House, Justice Stevens also administered the Judicial Oath to John Roberts in a private ceremony attended by the new Chief Justice's family and other members of the Supreme Court. Both oaths were administered so that Chief Justice Roberts could begin to work immediately in preparation for the opening of the Court's Term on Monday.

Press seating for the Court ceremony will be by reservation. Requests for seating must be received by the Public Information Office no later than 3 p.m., Friday, September 30.

Further details regarding the ceremony and other opportunities for coverage will be provided as they become available.
