NOTICE

For your information, on Tuesday, December 20, contractors will begin installing scaffolding on the West front of the Supreme Court Building. The main door and front steps have been closed to the public since November 28, when a piece of the marble dentil band fell from the pediment. The scaffold will enable conservators to examine the pediment and will provide a platform from which some immediate repairs can be made and temporary protective netting can be installed.

Erection of the scaffold should take approximately one week. The scaffolding will remain up for approximately two weeks while work on the pediment is performed. It is contemplated that the scaffolding will be completely dismantled by mid-January and the main door reopened. Additional repairs that may be required as a result of the examination will be made during the summer, when permanent protective netting will also be installed. Until the main door is reopened, visitors may continue to enter the building from the north (Maryland Avenue) door. When the Court is in session, members of the public should follow the Court's usual procedures and arrive at the front plaza where the public lines to attend oral argument form. Supreme Court police will provide direction to the appropriate entrance from the plaza.

Please contact the Court's Public Information Office, 202-479-3050, with any questions. Thank you.
